For me, Canadian Club Classic 12YO and Crown Royal Limited Edition are consistent benchmarks when it comes to striking an equilibrium between smoothness and substance.
Gibson's 18YO ups the oak ante, but the sweet grains balance out the drier input from those extra years in wood quite beautifully. Hiram Walker (of Canadian Club fame) Founders Whisky is simply dangerous! Here, the melding of slippery ease and underlying richness makes for a most engaging sort of spirit. Though there are many other 'new kids on the block' that may appeal to one or another individual, these three are sure to please. Honestly, when I begin to ponder the territory occupied by the more exclusive (and much costlier) Canadian bottlings, my mind turns to cask-strength Scotch and high-proof Bourbon.
