Meerschaum pipes

I'm considering buying a Meerschaum pipe, but I'd like to know what others thoughts are on them. Are they worth buying? Do they offer a better smoke or do they simply look cool? What are people's experiences with Meerschaum pipes? Is there a type of tobacco that smokes particularly well in a Meerschaum pipe? I'd like to hear people's thoughts on the subject.

Meers have a good heat tolerance so they make great tobacco pipes. They do change color from white to dark brown over time due to the oils on your fingers. That’s pretty cool. The only negative is they can break if dropped hard enough.

Yeah, what Mike said. I have 12 of them but rarely smoke them anymore. They take up space in my display cabinet! If you want a good smoke, stick with a good briar, or get a Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipe. Don't get me wrong, Turkish meerschaum pipes are good smokers, but they take a bit more care in handling them. Ofcourse, there are other pipes out there just as good, a morta pipe is something I have been wanting. Other pipes made out of other woods, such as pear are ok, but, I'd stick with briar.

A meerschaum is NOT supposed to "cake" or hold flavors like a briar, or so I am told. You can smoke aromatics and non-aromatics, instead of having a different pipe for each.
