Gel or Beads?
Ever since I bought a display case humidor (24 inches in height) what ever humidor device I use starts growing mold in about 2 weeks. So now I want to get either a Gel Humidification device or Humidity Beads. Which is better?

I've never heard of beads growing mold so I'd go with those, but I think that either of those is better than your current situation.

Yes, I'm using distilled water. I'm not getting any mold on the humidor or the cigars. As soon as I see mold starting to form on my humidor device I've been pulling it out. I've had over 5 other humidors that I used these devices with without any problem. The only thing I'm thinking is that it's been getting to humid in there. My stats been reading about 77 to 79 RH. Now I put 3 Drymistit tubes (crystal gels) (one on each shelf) and it's been reading 68 to 70 RH. So I'm gonna stay with either some type of jel device or beads. They both claim to keep the humidor at 70. I'm just looking to find out is one better then the other?

In any case, keep using beads or gel. But don't add PG solution to those. They don't require it. And make sure that humidity never goes up to 77 or 79 RH again!

One additional comment. PG with beads or gel is not only "not required", it will destroy them ! Distilled water ONLY! IMHO beads are the only way to go....and I don't work for Viper139! |
