Everclear is very popular for cleaning pipes as is 151 Bacardi rum. I have not had issues using vodka. I have also used diluted isopropyl alcohol. I think most folks use everclear.

I wonder if Wal-Mart has Everclear? If not, I'll probably have to travel about 35 miles to the closest liquor store over in Sedalia. I'll check at Wal-Mart tomorrow when I drive into town.

I for one am extremefully greatful for the tips. I got a small bottle of everclear and cleaned some of my "cleaned" pipes and rooted out a significant amount of tars. Great thread and very helpful.
