Zeitgeist

I'm a firm believer that there are certain bands that capture the spirit of a generation. I believe that Nirvana captured the spirit of the Zeitgeist of the generation just past my youth and on the cusp of my son's generation.

Are there other bands you can think of that captured the spirit of their generation?

The Who / zeppelin / stones... those do the 70's for me.
Styx and Foreigner were the 'power bands' of the 80's - along with Pat Benatar putting a womans voice back into rock (although there was still grace slick...)

The Rolling Stones. The Doors. The Beatles.

No offense to anyone here, but one of the few times I've ever agreed with Rolling Stone magazine was their take that Nirvana was way, way overrated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they sell more albums after whacko Cobain blew his brains around a room? By that I mean, after death sales of previous albums they cut when he was still alive.

If we extend that to be a little narrower, I think that the beach boys owned their market.

The doors kind of hit the mark.

Donna summer owned disco.

Kiss absolutely defined what it was to be a rowdy, loud, American teenager in the late seventies, but only for a few years. They were literally the masters of their universe when I was a freshman and they were passe when I graduated.

Hendrix. Without Hendrix there would not have been a Woodstock. Sit and ruminate in the implications of that.

I agree with the Who, Beatles and Stones, and would add Ramones, Sex Pistols and the Clash for the late 70s/early 80s.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s.. I followed, and still do, Metal and Rock and Roll.

Without question, Motorhead helped pave the way for these guys. I love the fact that they did it their way until the end, unlike a lot of bands that follow trends...
