Everyone should try different gins and choose which one they like the best.
I agree. I like both of the Gin's mentioned, but my preference is Sapphire w/olives. I prefer to have my Martini's shaken & bruised. Mmmmm...ice chips.

I also like Chopin Vodka shaken w/lemon twist (no Vermouth.) It's not a tradtional martini, but is passes for one on the 2-for-1 Martini Monday's at the local bar.

I used to shake martinis as well, but have come to prefer them gently stirred. No ice, no excess water in the drink, please.

Quality gin, vermouth, a coupla olives on a plastic sword, chilled martini glass.

I prefer Tanqeray for gin and tonic, because of the citrusy notes it already possesses (as uni noted).

I really like Sapphire for martinis.

And I have LONG been a proponent that vermouth has a place in a martini. Though of course you don't want too much, things like waving the cork over the glass or tipping the shaker in the direction of France are just stupid.

Heard a story once about a bartender whose client always complained of too much vermouth...even when all he served him was stirred gin with an olive in it.

A martini isn't a test of your manhood...it's just a good drink. When made right, it should be strong, but incredibly smooth going down.

That last statement sums it up very well.
