My old humidor
This old humidor is nothing to look at right now, but maybe I might get up enough courage to refinish it. It's from the 1930's era. My dad had it and I think it was given to him by his brother, my uncle John. My dad used it as a jewelry box and had it on his dresser for years. On the bottom it is stamped "Fact. No. 1338 1st Dist. of PA." and "The cigars herein contained were manufactured to retail at not more than five cents each and are so tax paid".

Cool cigar box humidor! It's in pretty good shape considering it was probably not made to last this long.

That's an odd looking puppy. I wonder who put the luggage clasp on? When you refinish, feel free to take that off and use some sort of decorative plates, or even label art under your finish. Looks like hard pine or Fir,maybe. I'd personally sand it down well and get a bright Amber finish like shellac or some oil based poly. If you can find spar varnish, that is yellow, but I've no experience with it.
The tinted, semigloss finish will be very authentic. |

Nope, it's original clasp on the box. Check below and scroll down through the pictures.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of cigar boxes on eBay with that clasp.

My God. I would have bet on that. The clasp is over the top heavy duty. It's designed to hold thirty pounds of luggage in place, it's big, costly, and as ugly as sodomy.
I'm truly amazed at that. It looks the box that my mother kept her roller skates in back in the forties, considering the wood and the clasps. Little known fact: my mother was a roller derby queen, her superhero name was Betty Boot in her first run. She was discharged from the league after a particularly egregious infraction. She sat out a year and returned under an assumed name and played as Betty Brute. Yes, she seriously lacked creativity. |
