Clay pipes

I just got a clay pipe, the brand is Gouda, made in Holland, and the first bowl left a weird taste in my mouth for a few hours. Anyone with any experience using clay pipes, is there something that needs to be burned off or something? The bowl is hollow, so condensation doesn't stay in the bowl, it runs down into the hollow space where the stem collects. Does clay need to be broken in like a briar?
