Cleaning your pipes
many years ago I used a product called Yellow Bowl to clean out the stems and inside my pipes. I looked at Decatur products from P&C and am wondering if the Pipe Shield Briar Fresh is something similar that I should invest in. What do you gents use to clean the inside of your pipes and stems?

I use the flat end of the pipe nail for the bowl and a regular pipe cleaner for the stem.

If a pipe needs some extra cleaning and requires solvents, I use Everclear.

I use a hard bristle pipe cleaner dipped in vodka or rum for deep cleaning. I ream my pipe once a year with the blade of a pocket knife. I sometimes use Jeff's method to do a light ream of the bowl with the flat end of a pipe nail.

I fill the bowl with salt, regular table salt, then top it off with everclear or 151, right up to the rim. Let this sit until the salt is dry and crusty. Crack out the salt and wipe the inside of the pipe with a paper towel. The alcohol will dissolve the oils and the salt will draw them out. You can tell it is working as the salt will get dark.
I use a pipe cleaner dipped in 151 to clean the stem. Just make sure you don't get 151/everclear on the outside of the bowl or you'll be re-waxing. Hope this helps.

Vodka? Rum? Hmm, I think I'll get drunk while I clean out my pipes!
I have the bristle type of pipe cleaners, and I have a bottle of Vodka, so I guess I'm all set up! What do you use to wax the pipe bowl and stem? Would Turtle Wax work?

Smokestack Jack, I have used Paragon Pipe Wax on my smooth briar pipes with great results. Easy to use. I hear carnauba wax works well but you have to buff harder to get the wax off when done.

OK, so I reamed out my pipe with a pipe cleaner. Then I ran another one through several times with Vodka. I let the pipe dry out for a couple of days. When I loaded it up with tobacco and smoked it, the taste was very bitter. I wonder if I have to use a better brand of vodka?! I smoked that same pipe again this morning with a different tobacco and the result was the same. A very bitter taste came out of the tobacco again. I hope I didn't ruin my pipe. Maybe I should have gone with the rum instead!
