Bummer, MOLD!

I just opened up my jar of C&D Epiphany and found mold in the tobacco. I guess I'll have to throw it all out. I didn't think that these air-tight canning jars would get mold in them unless it was there when I purchased the tobacco and I didn't see it. This is a bummer. Now I am paranoid and will have to check all my jars of tobacco. I guess I'll have to wash the jar out with hot soapy water and let it dry out before using it again.

Conrad, when did you get this tobacco? C & D sometimes has mold issues. Last one i am aware of was a batch if Bijou last year. Before that there was a batch of Red Flake (I think that's what it was called) that was hit with a mold problem.

If this tobacco was recently acquired, contact C & D. They are good with replacing tobacco that has mold on it.

Was this mold on the top layer nearest the jars opening or lower towards the middle or bottom? If it was near the top of the jar it might be contaminated with a dirty lid. If it is on the bottom, might be the jar was not properly cleaned before use.

As for cleaning jars, sterilize the jars by boiling the jars and lids in water before use per the instructions on this link.

Hot soap and water is not good enough for long term storage IMO.

Thanks for the info. The mold was throughout the tobacco. I purchased this batch in March this year. I think I'll just throw out the jar and not take a chance with it. I have been going through all my other tobacco and have not seen a problem. I hope this is just an isolated case.

That is a bummer Conrad, love Epiphany. I have read on other forums about mold in C&D tobaccos as well.

That’s terrible. Contact C&D. They might be able to help you.

Yeah I figure I should not touch this tobacco, just throw it out and sterilize the jar after I get in contact with someone. Either C&D or smokingpipes.com where I purchased it.

That's terrible. Can you cut that part out? I'm thinking that I might not buy anything C&D any more.

I was reading on another forum that you shouldn't smoke tobacco that has mold on it. I don't think I want to chance it. I sent an email to C&D and smokingpipes.com, we'll see what their responses are.
