Chasing Trane
Watched Chasing Trane, the John Scheinfeld documentary film on John Coltrane, this Monday evening past on PBS's Independent Lens. Really quite well done! In particular, it was fascinating to see photos and footage of Coltrane's family life, and to hear some of his descendants and fellow musicians recounting different aspects of the man. Anyone else see the film?

Did not see it. Not into modern jazz. Coleman Hawkins, early Armstrong and Miff Mole do it for me.

Of course, the term 'progressive' could also be applied to much of Armstrong's repertoire.

Accessible, progressive.. stuff just doesn't speak to me. 1930's Polish tangos, on the other hand.....

Just figured, if you were into Coleman Hawkins, that Coltrane's Ballads might work for you.

Coleman's solo on "Hello Lola," (late 1920's) does it beautifully. Never "got" Dave Brubeck, either.

I will be sure to look for it. Seems Canada gets some PBS programming before the States.

Found it on my PBS at 2:00 am (cst) Sunday.
DVR set, thanks. Check your local listings.

I see that it can be streamed at the PBS website. It was aired 11/6 here. Having some difficulty finding the rerun time online.
