The Balvenie 21 Year Old Port Wood isn't inexpensive, nor is it always easy to come across. Even I haven't laid down the dollars for it in some time (too many other offerings to check out, if you know what I mean).
But for anyone seeking something roughly along the same lines, it's worthwhile checking out the latest version of Balvenie's younger 'Vintage' Port Wood Finish (in this case, the 1993). No, we're not talking that captivating thread of velvety pastry-like sweetness that weaves through the 21 Year Old from start to finish. To be sure, the 1993 comes across as more vibrant and spicy. But there's still plenty of that trademark honeyed distillery characteristic to go around, and the overall presentation strikes a pretty good balance. If you're seeking a little Iberian flair in your single malt, this one just could be the ticket.
