I'm on a bluegrass kick right now

Listening to some really good bluegrass right now. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

It makes me laugh. "Athiests Don't Have No Songs" is a particular favorite right now off of the Rare Bird Alert record. Going to dive deep into some Flatt & Scruggs later on.

How in the hell do you get an 8 note range out of a 5 string instrument? 4 I could buy, 6 maybe. But 5 strings? WTF?

Also listening to some really inventive work by the late Michael Hedges. I got to see him perform live at 5 Points in Birmingham a year before he died. One of the most incredible single performers I've ever seen.

Louvin Brothers could give Flatt and Scruggs a run for their money any day of the week.

I'll have to look for them, Jeff. I just got in a copy of Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers live with Edie Brickell. I've never been and Edie fan and I wasn't really surprised when she married Paul Simon. Sir Paul McCartney performed with this group on Rare Bird Alert and it was a lot of fun. Maybe this disc can change my opinion of Edie.

It just amazes me how much improvisation they can get between beats with a 5 stringed instrument and still remain within the cadence of the tune. It may seem pasee to a musician, but it's downright on a pair with alchemy to me.

You ever listen to Bela Fleck? I caught him as he was rising back in the day. A gifted bluegrass musician. Also classic Doyle Lawson, it is bluegrass gospel but his band is smoother than smooth. I always liked Carter Stanley more so than his brother Ralph. Also, some of the old Keith Whitley bluegrass to include some of his collaborations...pure gold. And The Country Gentlemen if you can find their old stuff....

Been a long time fan of the Flectones. Just not as much in my regular rotation

I'd recommend the Punch Brothers for anyone looking for some more "contemporary" bluegrass. These guys can flat out play.
