I agree totally! I just moved to WA from TX, and am looking forward to a MUCH longer "pipe season" here.
I had a beautiful little Meer, a woman's hand holding a tulip, but the shank shattered during a cleaning. I mourned. I haven't been able to bring myself to get another.

It may have happened because you over smoked it. What I mean is many people think you dont have to rest a meer like you do with briars. If you smoke it too much and dont rest it, the tobacco juices, etc soften the meerschaum especially in the stem. I dont see any thing wrong with smoking multiple bowls a day but after that let it dry out for a couple of days before going back to it. The solution to this problem is buy multiple meers to have a rotation!
