First thing you need to do is pound your nutsack flat with a hammer if you even THINK of drinking a latte.
Nancy-boy shit.

My recipe for a "poor man's" latte.
1. You can find an inexpensive moka pot at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Follow the directions and you will yield some coffee, that while not really expresso, is a lot less hassle to make. 2. Put milk in a ceramic cup and microwave it on high until starts to steam but before it gets too close to boiling (this is important to experiment with and get it right because if it gets too hot or starts to boil the protein in the milk will form a skin/scum that isn't too appetizing). After a little practice, you will be able to heat the right amount of milk in your cup then fill the rest from the moka pot and you will have KatDad's "poor man's" latte.

My advice is if all you want is latte, then try something like KAtDad's PML. Real espresso takes a bit of investment...because little of the above discussion mentions that you really need to spend almost as much on a good burr grinder as the espresso. This is because you need a very tight range on grind size which is impossible with a blade grinder.
I would say the ~$100-150 grinder + $200-$250 espresso is really the bottom entry level or you are probably wasting money. And it's real easy to get close to $1000 total. |

Tex, Bialetti makes a Moka Pot for about $100 that is advertised as being good for making cappucinos.
OK, that being said, we have one for the camping trailer - no way I'm lugging Silvia along for camping trips - and I'll tell you, it does a good job for what it was designed to do but its not like a cap from a pump-driven machine. And a cap might not be milky enough for you. So my advice is to bite the bullet and look for a nice pump driven espresso machine. You'll also need a grinder. It may be over your budget but you can't be but so penny-wise pound foolish here - vassmoker, the gentleman from the greatest state in the Union, is right on so far as prices - and the drinks you make will be superb. Folks I work with say that the drinks I make with Silvia and a Cunill grinder are five times better than what they get at the boutique coffee shops here at work and which they pay about $5 for... You can get SOMEWHAT of a price break by checking places like 1st Line, wholelattelove, etc and seeing if they have closeouts, returns... I have also seen great buys on craigslist. Last week, a nice little Gaggia was going for $50. At least, it LOOKED nice....
