Well, I'd personally never keep my drawers in the humidor...

OH, Wait...

On topic, we used to have a member who would cut a set of Spanish Cedar planks to line a cooler, and they worked great as shelves in a wine coolerdor. He also made the most amazing trays that turned a Pelican camera box into a cedar lined traveldor. I think his CW handle was Vern...been a while.

Spanish cedar ONLY! Do NOT use aromatic cedar...unless you're an Acid fan.

No. You definitely want to stay away from any overly aromatic types of cedar. Spanish cedar is the variety to stick with.

For additional structural pieces of wood within the humidor, mahogany (Honduran mahogany is a nice, relatively close-grained wood to work with) will tolerate high internal humidity levels about as well as Spanish cedar.

If you need to use screws or hinges, stick to brass (not just brass plated but 100% brass) ones. Just be careful when drilling the pilot holes for the screws. The holes need to be pretty much exactly the same size as the inner diameters (i.e. the diameters of the screw shafts not including the projecting threads) of the screws.

And when you go to torque the screws into the pilot holes, go easy, as brass screws can easily sheer, leaving you with an imbedded screw body and a broken off screw head. Some people put a little bit of soap on the threads to facilitate the screwdriving.

Stainless steel would also work, no? just not look as sexy as real brass.

Possibly. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant but not necessarily totally corrosion proof, especially in high humidity/low air circulation environments. Its corrosion resistance factor can be increased by raising the chromium content (chromium content in stainless steel usually ranges from 10.5% to a maximum of 26% of total alloy content).

However, given the appearance criterium you mentioned, John (brass hardware does look nice!), and the fact that both Spanish cedar and mahogany are relatively easily worked woods, I think brass screws, latches and hinges are the way to go.

Of course, stainless steel screws would probably be quite appropriate for any structural applications where the screw heads would then be covered by Spanish cedar liners.
