Cigar Band ashtray glue
OK, it's cold here.
I have a heavy clear glass ashtray and felt. What I need to know is what type of glue or adhesive to use to attach the bands to the glass, and then the felt to the back of the bands. Any help?

Why did I get a vision of a guy with both hands glued to an ashtray, and the other side of the ashtray glued to his forehead?
:P

Where exactly are you trying to put the bands Inside the ashtray or outside of It. I have one that I attached the bands to the side of the inside of the ashtray used clear fingernail polish to attatch the bands I also used a clear coat polyurethane spray to coat the bands before I put them In It helps to keep them frome getting burnt. I myself would not put them on the bottom of the outside because when ashes are in It you cant see them you would only be able to see them when Its clean.

I thought about the fingernail polish idea and was concerned about the acetone affecting the color pigments in the bands. I was also concerned about how the polish would hold over time, but more about yellowing in the long term. I also thought about using a varnish, but yellowing was a concern for that too. I intend to put them on the outside (so I don't burn them up), all across the bottom and up the sides to the top of the tray, you can see the bands through the clear ashtray, untill it's full. I'll cover them with a layer of felt, to protect the bands, and any table I might set it on.
I've got a couple of old cigar band ashtrays that I've had for a long time and that's how they were done, but I had no idea with what kind of glue. I appreciate all the input. @ SmoKerch. I've had the same vision.....

If you use super glue, make sure you don't go take a leak while you are working on it

I suggest Scotch Super 77 Spray Adhesive for both. You have to be careful with this stuff. It is sticky as all hell and can get everywhere if you don't lay down alot of backing and such.
Also be very careful when spraying the bands. This stuff comes out of the can with a pretty good breeze and will blow the bands all over the place if you don't secure them before hand. So, spray the bands face side up, and attach them to the underside of the ashtray. Once that's done do the same with the felt. |
