Dead Air
I have a tendency to pack coolers with as many cigars as possible and I've noticed from the posts on this BB that the 'fit as many as you can' attitude appears to be the accepted strategy.
Has anyone ever noticed any pros or cons to leaving a percentage of empty space in a cooler or humidor? Temperature and humidity seem to generate a fair amount of angst, but I would think those two values have a relation to the amount of circulating air within the container and I've never seen the point addressed. |

IMO, (Not a scientist or expert here), as a % of volume it would be better to have more cigars and box material then open space, just not critical to the effectivness of your humidification. As I understand it, moisture is transfering into and out of your cigars with every change in temperature. Some will inevitably escape your cooler and need to be replenished. When moisture is out of your cigars, it's in the ambient airspace ready to re-enter the smokes or escape into your house the next time you open it to take a peek. The less airspace = the less that can be lost and less radical swings in hydration which is far more a concern to me then then overall %. When my collection gets low, I will add empty boxes, and ceder sheets to keep things stable.
Anxious to hear others opinions on this.

That's part of it, yes. Your cigars will absorb moisture and maintain it. When it comes to a humidifer, the more air it has to "humidify", the more water it will take. If you stack your humi full of sticks, there will be a period where you have to refill your humidifer a lot because your cigars are soaking up all the moisture. But once they reach the right humidity, the less air inside the humidor means less moisture that needs to be released from the humidifer, meaning the longer it can do without having to get refilled. None of this really matters if you take good care of your humi to begin with, making sure it's always the proper humidity.. It's just easier to maintain with more sticks in there.

I use several of the Oust Fans (minus the oil of course) in my cabinet humidor and it circulates the air very well.
I would think they would eliminate any dead air in a cooler. LINK
